Saint Brigid’s Cross Irish mothers give this as a wedding gift for the newly wed couple, it could also be a gift to get well soon.
St. Brigid’s day, February 1 is celebrated throughout Ireland, the crosses are hung in homes to invoke protection from fire and the elements, sickness and disease as well as evil spirits.
In many parts of Ireland the cross would be presented to a new couple at their wedding by their mothers, it was thought this was the last motherly act of protection she would perform as the young couple starts their new life together. Along with this blessing:
“May St. Brigid bless and protect this cross, the home where it rests and the family who gazes upon it. “
